Lil Win Criticises Ghana Film Dialogue for Excluding Local Languages

Popular Kumawood actor and comedian, Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has expressed disappointment over the recent National Film Authority (NFA) dialogue which was conducted solely in the English language.

According to Lil Win, the decision to use only English at such an important industry event creates a barrier for many Ghanaian filmmakers, producers, and actors who are more comfortable communicating in local dialects like Twi, Ga, and Ewe.

Speaking passionately, the actor noted that Ghana’s film industry thrives largely on indigenous content such as Kumawood movies, which are predominantly produced in Twi. He therefore believes that sidelining local languages at official film discussions undermines the identity of the Ghanaian movie industry.

“If the Ghanaian movie industry is built on local stories told in our own languages, why should a national dialogue ignore them? Not everyone in the industry is fluent in English, but that doesn’t make them less important,” Lil Win said.

Many stakeholders have since echoed Lil Win’s sentiments, arguing that local languages are a key tool for preserving Ghanaian culture and connecting with audiences both at home and abroad.

Industry analysts say the NFA may need to reconsider its communication strategies to ensure inclusivity, especially if the aim is to revamp Ghana’s film industry and give local players a stronger voice.
